Deborah Boliver Boehm is an American journalist, travel writer, editor, and translator known for her work in Japanese literature and folklore. She has contributed to Eastwest magazine and translated works by renowned Japanese authors, including Kenzaburō Ōe and Mariko Koike.

Boehm moved to Japan in 1970 to study Japanese language and culture in Kyoto, an experience that deeply influenced her writing. She has written extensively on horror and supernatural themes, often drawing from Japanese folklore.

Her notable publications include Ghost of a Smile: Stories (2001,) a collection of modern retellings of Japanese folklore, and A Zen Romance: One Woman’s Adventures in a Monastery (1996,) which recounts her experiences in a Zen monastery.

As a translator, Boehm has worked on Akimitsu Takagi’s The Tattoo Murder Case (1948,) Mariko Koike’s The Cat in the Coffin (1990,) Kenzaburō Ōe’s Death by Water (2009,) and Mariko Koike’s The Graveyard Apartment (1988.)
