Deborah Millman (b.1961) is an American writer, designer, educator, and artist known for her contributions to branding and design. She hosts Design Matters, one of the first and longest-running podcasts on design and creativity. Her work has influenced modern branding strategies and been exhibited in museums, including the Design Museum of Chicago and the Boston Biennale.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Millman studied English and Russian literature at the University at Albany, SUNY, graduating in 1983. She initially pursued a media career before transitioning to branding and design. In 1995, she joined Sterling Brands, becoming President of the Design Division, working on projects for Burger King and Star Wars. She later co-founded the Masters in Branding Program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Millman has authored several books, including Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits (2011,) Brand Bible (2012,) Self-Portrait as Your Traitor (2013,) Outside the Box (2015,) Why You? (2016,) Why Design Matters (2021,) and The Remarkable Life Deck (2022.) Her writing and illustrations have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Fast Company.
