Inspirational Quotes by David Starr Jordan (American Educator)

David Starr Jordan (1851–1931) was an American ichthyologist, educator, and peace activist known for his influential contributions to science and higher education. A dedicated advocate for peace, he was a founding member of the World Peace Foundation and campaigned for disarmament and international diplomacy, particularly during and after World War I.

Born in Gainesville, New York, Jordan developed an early interest in natural history, leading him to study at Cornell University and Lehigh University. He became a leading authority on fish, specializing in the classification of North American species.

After serving as president of Indiana University 1885–91, Jordan served as president of Stanford University 1891–1913, transforming it into a major center for research and learning. Under his leadership, Stanford expanded its faculty and curriculum, fostering advancements in scientific education. He was a staunch eugenics advocate who shaped early U.S. sterilization laws. He believed war depleted society’s best minds and opposed American involvement in World War I, championing peace movements.

He authored many publications, including The Fishes of North and Middle America (1896,) a multi-volume work that became a key reference in ichthyology. He also wrote The Blood of the Nation (1902) and War and the Breed (1915,) arguing that war weakened society by sacrificing its most capable individuals. The Human Harvest (1907) further explored this theme, critiquing war’s effect on human progress. His autobiography is The Days of a Man (1922.)
