David Edwin Ambrose (b.1943) is a British novelist, playwright, and screenwriter known for thrillers, science fiction, and psychological suspense. His career spans film, television, and literature, making him a versatile storyteller.
Born in Chorley, England, Ambrose studied law at Merton College-Oxford, but soon transitioned to writing. His early career included journalism for The Observer and scriptwriting for film and television, collaborating with Orson Welles.
His novels blend science, philosophy, and suspense, including The Man Who Turned Into Himself (1993,) Coincidence (1998,) Superstition (2000,) The Discrete Charm of Charlie Monk (2001,) The Darkness (2002,) and Mother of God (2005.) His books explore alternate realities, fate, and human consciousness, earning critical acclaim.
His screenwriting credits include Alternative 3 (1977,) a controversial mockumentary, and films like The Survivor (1981,) D.A.R.Y.L. (1985,) and Year of the Gun (1991.) He also wrote the stage play Siege (1972,) performed in London’s West End.
His memoir, A Fate Worse Than Hollywood (2019,) details his experiences in film and television.
