Darius Carlos Rucker (b.1966) is an American singer, songwriter, and musician, best known as the lead vocalist of Hootie & the Blowfish and for his solo country career. His distinctive voice and genre-crossing success made him a key figure in rock and country music.
Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Rucker co-founded Hootie & the Blowfish (1986) while attending the University of South Carolina. The band’s début album, Cracked Rear View (1994,) became one of the best-selling of all time, featuring hits like “Hold My Hand” and “Only Wanna Be with You.” After releasing five studio albums with the band, he transitioned to country music, signing with Capitol Nashville (2008.)
His solo country début, Learn to Live (2008,) featured the No. 1 hit “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” making him the first Black artist to top the Hot Country Songs chart since Charley Pride (1983.) His later albums include Charleston, SC 1966 (2010,) True Believers (2013,) Southern Style (2015,) When Was the Last Time (2017,) and Carolyn’s Boy (2023.)
