Daniel R. Scoggin (b.1937) is an American businessman known for expanding casual-theme restaurants and leading T.G.I. Friday’s to national success.
A San Jose State University graduate, he began his career at Boise Cascade Corporation (1960,) quickly rising through the ranks. In 1971, he left to license the T.G.I. Friday’s name from Alan Stillman, launching a franchise corporation in Dallas, Texas.
Under Scoggin’s leadership, T.G.I. Friday’s pioneered casual dining, catering to the Singles Era and introducing menu innovations like potato skins and blended drinks. He took the company public (1983,) and by 1986, there were over 100 U.S. locations, along with international expansion.
After retiring (1986,) Scoggin returned in 1995 as president of Ground Round/Gold Fork, revitalizing the brand. In 1998, he led a venture capital group that acquired Houlihan’s Restaurant Group, overseeing Devon’s Seafood Grill, Darryl’s, and J. Gilbert’s Wood-Fired Steaks & Seafood.
