Dan Wakefield (1932–2024) was an American novelist, journalist, and screenwriter known for his explorations of American life, spirituality, and social change. His works often reflected themes of self-discovery, relationships, and cultural shifts.

Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Wakefield attended Columbia University, studying English and journalism. He began his career covering major events like the Emmett Till murder trial for The Nation, establishing himself as a socially engaged writer.

His notable books include Going All the Way (1970,) a coming-of-age novel set in postwar America; Starting Over (1973,) exploring relationships and reinvention; New York in the Fifties (1992,) a memoir of his early journalism years; and Returning: A Spiritual Journey (1988,) chronicling his personal transformation and faith. He also edited Kurt Vonnegut: Letters (2012,) compiling correspondence from his longtime friend.

Beyond writing, Wakefield created the NBC series James at 15 (1977–78) and adapted his novels into feature films.
