Coleman Alexander Young (1918–97) was an American politician and civil rights activist, best known as Detroit’s first African American mayor (1974–94.) His tenure shaped the city’s political and economic landscape, advocating racial justice and urban renewal.

Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Young moved to Detroit in 1923, witnessing segregation and labor struggles. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as part of the Tuskegee Airmen. His activism began in the labor movement, joining the United Auto Workers (UAW) before entering Michigan politics.

Elected Michigan State Senator (1965–73,) Young became mayor in 1974, focusing on economic revitalization, police reform, and racial equity. His leadership saw major projects like the Renaissance Center and Joe Louis Arena but also faced criticism over economic decline and crime rates.

His autobiography, Hard Stuff: The Autobiography of Coleman Young (1994,) co-written with Lonnie Wheeler, explores his political career, civil rights activism, and leadership challenges.
