Inspirational Quotes by Cleveland Abbe (American Scientist)

Cleveland Abbe (1838–1916) was an American meteorologist, known as the father of U.S. weather forecasting. His pioneering work led to the establishment of the U.S. Weather Bureau (now the National Weather Service.)

Born in New York City, Abbe studied astronomy and mathematics at the Free Academy (now City College of New York,) earning a B.A. (1857) and M.A. (1860.) He trained at Harvard University under Benjamin Gould at the U.S. Coast Survey and studied meteorology at Pulkovo Observatory in Russia (1865–66.)

As director of the Cincinnati Observatory (1869,) Abbe launched the first public weather reporting system in the U.S., using telegraphic reports. His success led to the creation of the U.S. Weather Bureau (1870,) where he served as chief meteorologist.

His influential works include Meteorological Reports (1871,) The Philosophy of Meteorology (1893,) and The Mechanics of the Atmosphere (1910,) shaping modern meteorology.
