Inspirational Quotes by Clementine Paddleford (American Food Writer)

Clementine Paddleford (1898–1967) was an American food writer who revolutionized culinary journalism with vivid storytelling and adventurous reporting. She coined the term “hero” for submarine sandwiches and covered food aboard a U.S. Navy submarine (1960.)

Born in Stockdale, Kansas, Paddleford studied journalism at Kansas State Agricultural College (now Kansas State University) and later attended New York University and the Columbia School of Journalism.

She began writing for business publications before transitioning to food journalism, joining the New York Herald Tribune (1936.) She also contributed to Gourmet and This Week, becoming known for immersive food reporting. She traveled extensively, even piloting a Piper Cub airplane to document regional American cuisine.

Her most influential book, How America Eats (1960,) compiled her nationwide food explorations, highlighting diverse culinary traditions. Other notable works include Patchwork Quilts (1928,) A Dickens Christmas Dinner (1933,) Twelve Favorite Dishes (1947,) Recipes from Antoine’s Kitchen (1948,) A Flower for My Mother (1959,) and Clementine Paddleford’s Cook Young Cookbook (1966.) Her recipes were collected in The Best in American Cooking (1970.)
