General Charles A. “Chuck” Horner (b.1936) is a retired U.S. Air Force four-star general known for his leadership in air combat strategy and military operations. He played a key role in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, commanding U.S. and allied air forces during the Gulf War.
Born in Davenport, Iowa, Horner attended the University of Iowa, commissioning into the Air Force Reserve in 1958. He became a fighter pilot, flying combat missions in Vietnam, including Wild Weasel operations targeting enemy air defenses.
Horner commanded air divisions, including the 9th Air Force and U.S. Central Command Air Forces, overseeing coalition operations in the Middle East. His expertise in air campaign planning shaped modern aerial warfare.
His book Every Man a Tiger (1999,) co-written with Tom Clancy, provides an insider’s perspective on air combat and military leadership, detailing his Gulf War experiences and strategic decision-making.
Horner retired in 1994, later working as a consultant and public speaker, advising on military strategy and defense policy.
