Charles Thomas Close (1940–2021) was an American painter and photographer known for his large-scale portraits that utilized a grid system to create intricate and detailed compositions. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the late 20th century, and he is best known for his large-scale Photo-realist portraits.

Born in Monroe, Washington, Close graduated from the University of Washington (B.A., 1962) before attending graduate school at Yale University (B.F.A., 1963; M.F.A., 1964.) In 1964, he won a Fulbright scholarship to study in Vienna. Throughout his career, he created works in various mediums, including painting, photography, printmaking, and tapestries.

Close is best known for his portraits of friends and fellow artists, which often featured extreme close-ups of faces that revealed every detail of the subject’s skin and features. In 1988, he was paralyzed by a spinal artery collapse, but he continued to work using a wheelchair and special equipment, adapting his painting style and working methods.

In 2017, Close was accused by several women of verbal sexual misconduct at various times 2005–13. Close went on to apologize, but some of his exhibitions were canceled.
