Inspirational Quotes by Charlton Ogburn (American Memoirist)

Charlton Ogburn Jr. (1911–98) was an American writer, soldier, and government official known for works on military history, nature writing, and Shakespearean authorship. His literary career spanned over four decades, covering history, nature, and literature.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Ogburn graduated from Harvard University (1932) and worked in publishing before serving in World War II. As a communications officer for Merrill’s Marauders, a U.S. Army unit in the Burma Campaign, he later wrote The Marauders (1959,) a firsthand account of their operations.

After the war, Ogburn worked for the U.S. State Department, specializing in Southeast Asian affairs. He later transitioned to full-time writing, producing The Winter Beach (1966,) a celebrated nature memoir, and Railroads: The Great American Adventure (1977,) written for the National Geographic Society.

A leading advocate of the Oxfordian theory of Shakespeare authorship, Ogburn argued that Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, was Shakespeare’s true author. His book The Mysterious William Shakespeare: The Myth and the Reality (1984) reignited public interest, leading to mock trials and televised discussions.
