Charles Macomb Flandrau (1871–1938) was an American author and essayist known for his sharp observations on college life, travel, and society. His works captured early 20th-century American and Mexican culture with wit and precision.
Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Flandrau attended Harvard, where he engaged in literary circles and edited The Harvard Monthly. After graduating in 1895, he briefly taught English literature at Harvard before pursuing writing full-time.
His début, Harvard Episodes (1897,) realistically portrayed undergraduate life. He followed with The Diary of a Freshman (1901,) further exploring college experiences. His travel book Viva Mexico! (1908) offered a vivid depiction of Mexican society under Porfirio Díaz, earning acclaim. Other notable works include Prejudices (1911,) Loquacities (1931,) and Sophomores Abroad (1935.)
Flandrau contributed essays and short stories to The Saturday Evening Post and other publications, gaining popularity for his refined style. He later worked as a drama and music critic for the St. Paul Pioneer Press (1915–20.)
