Charles Macklin (1699–1797,) born Charles McLaughlin, was an Irish actor and playwright known for his innovations in theatrical realism and long London stage career. Celebrated for his sharp wit, bold performances, and contributions to 18th-century drama, he remained a dominant theatrical figure into his 90s.
Born in County Donegal, Ireland, Macklin moved to London, becoming a leading actor at Drury Lane Theatre. His 1741 portrayal of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice transformed the character from a comedic stereotype into a complex figure, marking a shift toward naturalistic acting.
Macklin wrote several plays, including Love à la Mode (1759,) a comedy on social class and identity, and The Man of the World (1781,) a satirical drama on corruption and ambition. His works featured sharp dialogue and social critique.
His life was marked by controversy, including a 1735 manslaughter charge after a dispute with a fellow actor. Despite challenges, he remained influential in London theater.
