Inspirational Quotes by Charles Evans Hughes (American Elected Rep)

Charles Evans Hughes (1862–1948) was an American statesman, lawyer, and jurist who shaped U.S. politics and law. He served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Secretary of State, and 11th Chief Justice.

Born in Glens Falls, New York, Hughes excelled academically, graduating from Brown University before attending Columbia Law School. As New York’s governor (1907–10,) he tackled corruption and corporate abuses. In 1910, he became an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court but resigned in 1916 to run for president as the Republican candidate, narrowly losing to Woodrow Wilson.

After his presidential bid, Hughes served as U.S. Secretary of State (1921–25,) influencing international diplomacy, including the Washington Naval Conference. He returned to the Supreme Court as Chief Justice (1930,) guiding the court through the Great Depression and early New Deal era.

Hughes was also a prolific writer. His Autobiographical Notes (1973) provide insights into his legal philosophy and career. Merlo J. Pusey’s Charles Evans Hughes (2 vols., 1951) offers a detailed account of his life and achievements.
