Byron Leslie Dorgan (b.1942) is an American author, businessman, and former politician, serving as a U.S. Representative (1981–92) and U.S. Senator (1992–2011) from North Dakota. A member of the Democratic Party, he held Senate leadership roles for 16 years.
Born in Dickinson, North Dakota, Dorgan earned a B.S. from the University of North Dakota and an MBA from the University of Denver. He started in North Dakota’s tax commission before moving to national politics.
In the Senate, Dorgan focused on energy policy, infrastructure, taxation, and Native American affairs, chairing the Senate Indian Affairs Committee (2007–11.) A vocal advocate for economic reform and corporate accountability, he later worked as a senior policy advisor, adjunct professor, and Native American youth advocate.
Dorgan, a New York Times bestselling author, wrote Take This Job and Ship It: How Corporate Greed and Brain-Dead Politics Are Selling Out America (2006,) Reckless! How Debt, Deregulation and Dark Money Nearly Bankrupted America (2012,) and The Girl in the Photograph: The True Story of a Native American Child, Lost and Found in America (2019.) He co-authored eco-thrillers Blowout (2012) and Gridlock (2013.)
