Bob Newhart (1929–2024,) fully George Robert Newhart, was an American comedian, actor, and author, known for his deadpan delivery and stammering comedic style. Rising to fame in the 1960s, he became one of stand-up comedy and television’s most beloved figures.

Born in Oak Park, Illinois, he studied accounting at Loyola University Chicago before pursuing comedy. His breakthrough came with The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart (1960,) a comedy album that topped the Billboard charts and won two Grammy Awards, followed by The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back! (1960,) another bestseller.

Newhart transitioned to television, starring in The Bob Newhart Show (1972–78) and Newhart (1982–90), both critically acclaimed sitcoms. He later appeared in films such as Elf (2003) and voiced Bernard in Disney’s The Rescuers (1977.)

Beyond comedy, Newhart wrote I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This! (2006,) a memoir reflecting on his career. His influence earned him multiple honors, including an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
