Bob Nelson (b.1958) is an American stand-up comedian and actor, known for his rubber-faced characters and physical humor. He gained prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, performing alongside Rodney Dangerfield, Jerry Seinfeld, and Eddie Murphy.
Born in Massapequa, New York, Nelson studied theater at Nassau Community College and began performing stand-up in local clubs. His exaggerated characters and slapstick routines earned recognition. His football routine, parodying college player introductions, became a comedy classic.
Nelson was Rodney Dangerfield’s opening act for eight years, appearing in two of Dangerfield’s HBO stand-up showcases. He later starred in two HBO specials, including Nelson Schmelson. He also performed on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, Late Night with David Letterman, and The Merv Griffin Show.
His film roles include Kindergarten Cop (1990,) This Is My Life (1992,) and Brain Donors (1992,) a Marx Brothers-style comedy. He won an Emmy Award in 1983 for writing and starring in the children’s show Double Muppet Hold the Onions. Nelson relocated to Branson, Missouri (2008–11) for a live residency, later moving his show to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee (2012–14.) He continues performing and developing new comedy projects.
