Inspirational Quotes by Bessie Smith (American Singer)

Bessie Smith (1892–1937) was an American blues singer, known as the “Empress of the Blues” for her powerful voice and influence on jazz and blues. One of the most popular and highest-paid African American performers of the 1920s and 1930s, she shaped blues evolution and inspired generations.

Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith faced poverty after losing her parents young. She began performing on street corners before joining a traveling troupe with Ma Rainey, who mentored her. In 1923, she signed with Columbia Records, releasing her first hit, Downhearted Blues (1923,) which sold over two million copies.

Smith recorded 160 songs, collaborating with jazz greats like Louis Armstrong and Fletcher Henderson. Notable works include St. Louis Blues (1925,) Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out (1929,) and Gimme a Pigfoot and a Bottle of Beer (1933.)
