Inspirational Quotes by Benjamin Mays (American Minister, Educator)

Benjamin Elijah Mays (1894–1984) was a key American minister, educator, and civil rights leader whose ideas helped shape the movement’s foundation. As Morehouse College’s sixth president (1940–67,) he mentored future leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr., Julian Bond, and Maynard Jackson, instilling principles of justice, education, and nonviolent resistance.

Born in Ninety Six, South Carolina, Mays defied segregation to pursue education, earning a degree from Bates College in 1920 and a PhD from the University of Chicago in 1935. He worked with the Urban League and YMCA, advocating for Black advancement before entering academia. His first major work, The Negro’s God as Reflected in His Literature (1938,) examined religious themes in African American writing.

As dean of the School of Religion at Morehouse, then its president, Mays transformed the college into a powerhouse for Black leadership. His book Seeking to Be Christian in Race Relations (1957) explored faith’s role in racial justice. His autobiography, Born to Rebel (1971,) chronicled his battles and achievements.
