Paul William “Bear” Bryant (1913–83) was a legendary American football coach, widely regarded as one of the greatest college football coaches in history. Known for his tough, disciplined approach, he led the University of Alabama football team to national prominence, securing six national championships during his 25-year tenure as head coach.

Born in Moro Bottom, Arkansas, Bryant attended the University of Alabama, where he played as a defensive back under coach Frank Thomas. After a brief career in professional football, he began coaching at various institutions, including the University of Maryland, Kentucky, and Texas A&M. However, it was his time at Alabama that defined his career and solidified his place in football history.

Bryant’s success at Alabama was built on a foundation of intense discipline and rigorous training. His teams were known for their physicality and strong work ethic. Under his leadership, Alabama won 323 games, making him one of the winningest coaches in college football. His teams claimed national championships in 1962, 1966, 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1980. Notable players such as Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler, and Richard Todd played under his coaching.

His autobiography is Bear: Life and Times of Alabama’s Coach (1974.)
