Barbara Howard (1926–2002,) born Helen Barbara Howard, was a Canadian painter, wood engraver, bookbinder, and designer known for her intricate craftsmanship and artistic versatility. Influenced by nature, mythology, and literature, her work remains celebrated for its precision and depth.

Born in Long Branch, Ontario, Howard studied at the Ontario College of Art (1948–51,) earning a silver medal in drawing and painting. She later attended Saint Martin’s School of Art in London, immersing herself in European artistic traditions. Her work is featured in prestigious collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the British Library, and the Library of Congress.

Elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (1975,) she significantly influenced Canadian art. She collaborated with her husband, poet Richard Outram, creating finely designed books combining her engravings with his poetry, including The Moth and Other Poems (1975) and The Promise of Light (1994.) She exhibited regularly at the Picture Loan Society, a Toronto gallery promoting contemporary Canadian artists.
