Inspirational Quotes by Arthur Daley (American Sportswriter)

Arthur John Daley (1904–74) was an American sports journalist best known for his long tenure at The New York Times and Pulitzer-winning sports commentary. His coverage shaped sports journalism for nearly five decades.

Born in New York City, Daley attended Fordham University, where he was sports editor of the university newspaper. After graduating in 1926, he joined The New York Times as a field reporter, covering major events like the 1927 heavyweight championship fight between Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey.

Daley became lead sports columnist in 1942, writing Sports of The Times daily for 32 years. He covered the Olympics, baseball, boxing, and football, producing over 10,000 columns. He won the Pulitzer for Local Reporting (1956) and was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame (1976.)

Notable works include Inside Baseball (1950,) Times at Bat: A Half Century of Baseball (1950,) Pro Football’s Hall of Fame (1962,) and Sports of the Times: The Arthur Daley Years (1975.) He also co-authored The Story of the Olympic Games (1956,) chronicling Olympic history.
