Anne-Marie Slaughter (b.1958) is an American international lawyer, foreign policy scholar, and public intellectual whose career spans academia, government, and civic leadership.

Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, she earned her B.A. from Princeton University, followed by an M.Phil. and D.Phil. in international relations from Oxford, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. She later held faculty positions at the University of Chicago and Harvard Law School before serving as dean of Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs 2002–09.

In 2009, Slaughter became the first woman to serve as Director of Policy Planning at the U.S. Department of State under Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She later continued her public-policy leadership as president and CEO of New America, a prominent think tank focused on democracy, technology, and social innovation.

Her scholarship and writing span global governance, foreign policy, and gender equity. Her notable books include A New World Order (2004,) which explores transnational networks in global politics, and The Idea That Is America (2007,) a reflection on American values and foreign policy. Her Unfinished Business (2015) is inspired by her widely discussed Atlantic article “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” which ignited national debate on work, family, and gender roles.
