Inspirational Quotes by Amy Carmichael (British Protestant Missionary)

Amy Beatrice Carmichael (1867–1951) was an Irish Christian missionary and author. She dedicated her life to serving and rescuing children from temple prostitution in India, leaving an enduring legacy through her selfless work.

Born in Millisle, County Down, Ireland, Carmichael’s early education at Harrogate Ladies College shaped her youth. Convinced of her missionary calling, she joined the Church Missionary Society and served in Japan, Ceylon (Sri Lanka,) and later in Bangalore, India.

Commissioned by the Church of England Zenana Mission, she dedicated 55 years to her missionary service in India. Her focus was on girls and young women, rescuing them from customs akin to forced prostitution. In 1901, she founded the Dohnavur Fellowship in Tamiḻ Nadu, India, providing a haven for girls escaping temple servitude. Over the years, the fellowship expanded into a refuge for hundreds of children.

Carmichael’s enduring impact is evident through the continued existence of the Dohnavur Fellowship, which persists in providing care and support to children in need. Her influential book, Things as They Are: Mission Work in Southern India (1903,) documented her experiences and observations of cultural and religious practices in India. Another significant work, Gold Cord (1932,) delved into the spiritual aspects of Christian living.

The Faith that nothing can dismay
The Hope no disappointments tire
The Passion that’ll burn like fire
Let me not sink to be a clod
Make me Thy fuel, Flame of God.

Blessed are the single-hearted, for they shall enjoy much peace. If you refuse to be hurried and pressed, if you stay your soul on God, nothing can keep you from that clearness of spirit which is life and peace. In that stillness you will know what His will is.
