Inspirational Quotes by Aline Murray Kilmer (American Poet)

Aline Murray Kilmer (1888–1941) was an American poet, children’s book author, and essayist known for her subtle, introspective poetry. She was the wife and widow of poet Joyce Kilmer, killed in World War I.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Kilmer was the daughter of poet Ada Foster Murray and newspaper editor Kenton C. Murray. She attended Rutgers College Grammar School and the Vail-Deane School, graduating in 1908. Shortly after, she married Joyce Kilmer and had five children.

After her husband’s death in 1918, Kilmer turned to writing, often exploring themes of loss, faith, and resilience. Her poetry collections include Candles That Burn (1919,) Vigils (1921,) The Poor King’s Daughter and Other Poems (1925,) and Selected Poems (1929.) She also authored Hunting a Hair Shirt and Other Spiritual Adventures (1923,) a collection of prose essays.

Kilmer’s poetry was described as delicate and subdued, contrasting with her husband’s direct, vigorous style. Her works often carried an ironic tone shaped by personal tragedy.
