Inspirational Quotes by Alfred Sheinwold (American Bridge Player)

Alfred “Freddy” Sheinwold (1912–97) was an American bridge player, writer, and administrator known for advancing contract bridge strategy and education. He co-developed the Kaplan–Sheinwold bidding system, influencing precision and partnership cooperation in competitive play.

Born in London, England, Sheinwold emigrated to the United States at nine. He became a bridge expert early, graduating from City College of New York (1933) and working with Ely Culbertson, a leading bridge theorist. He later edited The Bridge World (1934–63,) shaping bridge literature.

During World War II, Sheinwold served as chief code and cipher expert in the U.S. Office of Strategic Services, applying his analytical skills to intelligence. After the war, he chaired the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) National Laws Commission (1964–75) and the ACBL Appeals Committee (1966–70.)

Sheinwold authored several influential books, including Five Weeks to Winning Bridge (1969,) Bridge Play for Beginners (1970,) Sheinwold’s Bridge Guide for Beginners (1966,) and How to Improve Your Bridge (1963.)
