Alfred Henry Forrester (1804–72,) known under the pseudonym Alfred Crowquill, was an English author, illustrator, and comics artist. His work spanned literature, caricature, and children’s books, making him a key figure in Victorian-era publishing.

Born in London, Forrester discovered his talent for writing and illustration early. He contributed to Colburn’s New Monthly, Bentley’s Miscellany, and Punch, crafting short tales, songs, children’s stories, and burlesques. His artistic skills included wood engravings, etchings, and pen-and-ink caricatures, often depicting anthropomorphic animals.

He collaborated with his brother Charles Robert Forrester, illustrating Absurdities (1827) and Castle Baynard (1824.) His independent works include Phantasmagoria of Fun (1843,) a collection of humorous sketches, and Strange Surprising Adventures of the Venerable Gooroo Simple (1861,) a comic tale set in India. He also illustrated the English edition of Master Tyll Owlglass.

His contributions extended to ceramics, including a statuette of Wellington Bear and a Memorial of the Great Exhibition (1851.) He illustrated children’s plays such as Julia Corner’s Beauty and the Beast (1854) and contributed to London pantomimes, designing scenes and effects.
