Inspirational Quotes by Alexander Gregg (American Episcopal Bishop)

Alexander White Gregg (1819–93) was an American Episcopal bishop, best known as Texas’ first Bishop (1859–93.) His leadership shaped the Episcopal Church in Texas through the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Born in Society Hill, South Carolina, Gregg graduated from South Carolina College (1838) and initially practiced law before entering the Episcopal ministry. Ordained as a deacon (1846) and priest (1847,) he served as rector of St. David’s Church in Cheraw, South Carolina, before being elected Bishop of Texas (1859.)

Gregg expanded the Episcopal Church in Texas from six to sixty churches and presided over the Diocese’s division (1874,) creating two new missionary districts. He also served as Chancellor of the University of the South (1887–93.) History of the Old Cheraws (1867,) explores his native region’s history, focusing on its role in the American Revolution.
