Alan Dean Foster (b.1946,) pen name James Lawson, is an American author known for his contributions to science fiction and fantasy literature. He gained prominence with his novelizations of films such as Star Wars, Alien, and Star Trek, all of which were released in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Born in New York City, Foster graduated from the University of California-Los Angeles, with a B.A. in 1968 and an M.F.A. in 1969. He authored numerous original works spanning various genres. Some of his notable publications include Midworld (1975,) a science fiction novel set on a unique jungle planet, and Nor Crystal Tears (1982,) a novel exploring the clash of cultures between humans and an alien race called the Thranx.
In addition to his standalone novels, Foster has created series such as the Humanx Commonwealth universe, featuring works like Cachalot (1980) and Mid-Flinx (1995.)
