Inspirational Quotes by Aeschines (Greek Orator)

Aeschines (389–314 BCE) was an Athenian statesman, orator, and diplomat influential in Athenian politics during Macedonia’s rise and known for his rivalry with Demosthenes. His prominence spanned 348 to 330 BCE, a period of intense political conflict in Athens.

Born into modest circumstances, Aeschines worked as an actor and held minor government roles before becoming a skilled orator. His diplomatic efforts were crucial in negotiations with Philip II of Macedon, advocating peace between Athens and Macedonia. His support for the Peace of Philocrates (346 BCE) led to treason accusations from Demosthenes, sparking their bitter feud.

In 330 BCE, Aeschines prosecuted Ctesiphon for unlawfully proposing an honorary crown for Demosthenes, but his case was decisively defeated by Demosthenes’ oration, On the Crown. Following his loss, he voluntarily exiled himself to Rhodes, where he taught rhetoric.

Three of Aeschines’ speeches survive: Against Timarchus (345 BCE,) On the Embassy (343 BCE,) and Against Ctesiphon (330 BCE,) showcasing his rhetorical finesse, strategic argumentation, and political ideology.
