Pauline Phillips (1918–2013,) born Friedman, known by her pen name Abigail Van Buren, was an American advice columnist best known for Dear Abby, which she began in 1956. Her approachable and witty style made her a trusted voice, reaching millions of readers nationwide.

Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Phillips was the daughter of Jewish immigrants and grew up in an environment that valued intellectual curiosity. She attended the University of Washington but left before graduating to marry Morton Phillips in 1939, with whom she had two children. She started writing for local publications before creating Dear Abby, a column she wrote until 2002. She then passed the column to her daughter, Jeanne Phillips, but continued to contribute her advice for years.

Phillips authored several books, including Dear Abby: The Best of Abby (1980) and The Dear Abby Cookbook: Recipes by Abigail Van Buren (1982.)
