A. M. Rosenthal (1922–2006,) born Abraham Michael “Abe” Rosenthal, was a Canadian-born American journalist and editor who shaped modern journalism. As executive editor of The New York Times (1977–86,) he guided its coverage of the Vietnam War, the Pentagon Papers, and Watergate, cementing its reputation for investigative journalism and editorial integrity.

Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Rosenthal moved to the U.S. as a child and grew up in the Bronx. He attended City College of New York, starting his career as a campus correspondent for The New York Times in 1943. He later reported from India, Poland, Switzerland, and Japan, earning a Pulitzer in 1960 for his international coverage.

Transitioning to editorial leadership, he served as metropolitan editor, managing editor, and executive editor, championing investigative journalism and firm editorial standards. His works include The New York Times: The Complete Front Pages (2008) and The Final Days: The Last, Desperate Abuses of Power by the Clinton White House (2001.) After retiring, he wrote for the New York Daily News until 2004.
