A. J. Cronin (1896–1981,) born Archibald Joseph Cronin, was a Scottish physician and novelist known for blending realism with social criticism, earning a broad Anglo-American readership. His novels explored medical ethics, class struggles, and personal redemption, praised for their narrative skill and sharp social observations.

Born in Cardross, Scotland, Cronin studied medicine at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 1919. He served as a Royal Navy surgeon in World War I and later worked as a medical inspector of mines, experiences that shaped his writing. In 1926, he opened a medical practice in London but left due to health issues, using the time to write his début novel, Hatter’s Castle (1931,) an immediate success.

Notable works feature The Stars Look Down (1935,) which explores social injustices in a mining community, and The Citadel (1937,) a critique of private medical practice that helped shape the National Health Service. The Keys of the Kingdom (1942,) a widely popular novel, follows a Catholic missionary in China. Other works are The Green Years (1944,) Shannon’s Way (1948,) The Judas Tree (1961,) and A Song of Sixpence (1964.)
