Gordon Rupert Dickson (1923–2001) was a Canadian-American science fiction and fantasy writer known for imaginative storytelling and explorations of human evolution, military themes, and philosophy. His work blended adventure with deep intellectual inquiry, making him a key figure in speculative fiction.

Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Dickson moved to Minnesota after his father’s death. He served in the U.S. Army (1943–46) before earning a B.A. in English from the University of Minnesota (1948.) He became a full-time writer in 1950, producing a prolific body of work that won multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards.

Dickson is best known for the Childe Cycle series, which explores humanity’s future development through cultural lenses. Key novels include Dorsai! (1959,) Soldier, Ask Not (1967,) and The Final Encyclopedia (1984.) His fantasy novel The Dragon and the George (1976) won the British Fantasy Award and inspired the Dragon Knight series.

Dickson served as President of the Science Fiction Writers of America (1969–71.) Other notable works include Time Storm (1977,) The Far Call (1979,) and Wolf and Iron (1990.) His short fiction collections, such as Danger—Human (1970) and In the Bone (1987,) showcase his versatility.
