Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950) was an American novelist and writer of science fiction. He is chiefly remembered for his Tarzan adventure stories.

Born the son of a wealthy businessman in Chicago, Burroughs served in the U.S. cavalry and fought against the Apache but was discharged when he was discovered underaged. After that, he held several unsuccessful jobs and started failed business ventures before writing to improve on the average “dime” novel.

Burroughs’s Tarzan of the Apes (1914) was the first book to feature the eponymous hero, the son of a British aristocrat, abandoned in the African jungle and brought up by apes. It spawned many sequels and films (featuring Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan,) radio programs, and comic strips. All told, Burroughs wrote 25 Tarzan books, which were translated into more than 50 languages.

Burroughs also created the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter and the fictional landmass within Earth known as Pellucidar. His California ranch is now the center of the Tarzana neighborhood in Los Angeles. In 1961, a public library briefly banned the Tarzan series because the library officials thought the adventure stories were unsuitable for youngsters.

During World War II, Burroughs became a correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, and at age 66, was the oldest war correspondent covering the South Pacific theatre.
