Mukesh Ambani (b.1957) is an Indian industrialist. He leads Reliance Industries, India’s biggest private-sector corporation with business interests in polyester, petrochemicals, retail, media, and telecom.

Born of humble circumstances in Aden, Yemen, Mukesh studied chemical engineering at the University of Mumbai. He subsequently attended Stanford Business School but quit without graduating. After joining his family’s Reliance group in 1981, Mukesh gained a reputation as an empire-builder by leading Reliance’s backward integration from textiles into polyester fibers and further into petrochemicals and petroleum refining, and then up-stream into oil and gas exploration and production.

Mukesh is the elder son of Dhirubhai Ambani, the founder of Reliance. Upon the death of Dhirubhai in 2002, Mukesh and his younger brother Anil took the reins of Reliance but split in 2005. Mukesh retained the textiles and petrochemicals businesses with the Reliance Industries corporate name. Anil took control of telecom, infrastructure, and finance divisions and started the Reliance Group, also called the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group.

Mukesh has proved the more successful of the two—in 2010, he marked his achievements by building a 27-story mansion in Mumbai.

Mukesh is India’s richest man and is among the richest in the world. He has come under criticism not only for the immense concentration of India’s wealth and power in the hands of a few corporate dynasties that shape the country’s destiny, but also for Reliance Industries’s intricate and shady shareholding pattern, and its influence on the functioning of India’s political economy.
