Inspirational Quotes by William Romaine (English Preacher)

William Romaine (1714–95) was a Church of England clergyman and later evangelical preacher.

Born in Hartlepool, County Durham, Romaine studied at Hart Hall (later Hertford College,) Oxford. Later he moved to Christ Church College, where Charles Wesley had become a tutor. Romaine received his BA in 1734 and an MA in 1737.

Romaine followed the scholarly traditions of the Church of England in his early years. In 1755, he came under the influence of the cleric George Whitfield (one of the founders of Methodism.) He became one of the chief representatives of rigid Calvinism. His preaching attracted vast crowds to St George’s, Hanover Square in Westminster. From 1756, Romaine became a priest at St Olave’s in Southwark and, in 1766, the incumbent of St Anne’s, Blackfriars, where his revivalist preaching continued to draw large congregations.

Romaine was the author of works such as the trilogy The Life, the Walk, and the Triumph of Faith (1764) which was once highly thought of by the evangelicals.
