Waylon Jennings (1937–2002,) fully Waylon Arnold Jennings, was an American country musician. A prominent figure in the Outlaw Movement of the 1970s, he revitalized country music. He recorded Nashville’s first million-selling album and sold more than 40 million records in a career spanning six decades.

Born in Littlefield, Texas, Jennings was a radio disc jockey by the age of twelve and joined singer-songwriter Buddy Holly’s band The Crickets in 1958. Musician Chet Atkins signed Jennings to RCA in 1965, where his fight for better artistic influence produced the classic Honky Tonk Heroes (1972.) He was a part of the so-called Outlaws Clique in the mid-1970s and had enormous commercial success into the early 1980s.

In 1985, Jennings created the country supergroup The Highwaymen with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson. He also converted his autobiographical album A Man Called Hoss (1987) into a successful one-man show. Jennings’s well-known songs include “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” (1978) and “The Eagle” (1990.)

Jennings’s later albums include Too Dumb for New York, Too Ugly for LA (1992,) and Waymore’s Blues Part II (1994.) He was an outspoken campaigner against drugs and for high school education.
