Inspirational Quotes by Walter Chrysler (American Engineer, Industrialist)

Walter Percy Chrysler (1875–1940) was an American self-trained engineer and automobile manufacturer. He is the founder of Chrysler Corporation.

Born in Wamego, Kansas, to a railroad engineer, Chrysler developed a passion for machinery. He skipped college, apprenticed in a railroad machine shop when he was 17 years old, and spent the next 20 years working his way up the echelons of railroad engineering, developing a reputation for his creative mechanical mind and his tireless enthusiasm.

In 1908, Chrysler bought his first car and spent time studying its mechanical system, dissembling and assembling it back again until he knew it.

At age 36, Chrysler joined General Motors (GM) as the manager of the Buick plant in Flint, Michigan. In the ensuing years, Chrysler completely revolutionized Buick’s manufacturing system by introducing assembly-line processes pioneered by Henry Ford and thereby tripling production. Soon, Chrysler became president of the Buick division and transformed it into GM’s most robust unit and the most successful automobile brand in America.

After disagreements regarding production-cost management with GM’s founder William Durant, Chrysler quit GM. He soon took over the leadership of the Willys-Overland Company and the Maxwell Motor Company. Chrysler set about reviving Maxwell and introduced the Chrysler Six vehicle in 1924. The low-cost car was a hit with the public, and some 32,000 units were built and sold in a single year. With the success of the Chrysler brand, Maxwell Motor Corporation was reorganized into the Chrysler Corporation. In 1928, Chrysler purchased Dodge Brothers and became a major company in the American automotive industry alongside GM and Ford. Chrysler was named Time magazine’s 1928 Man of the Year.

In 1929, Chrysler financed the construction of the grand seventy-seven-floor Chrysler Building in New York City, a skyscraper that immediately became an American architectural landmark.

Chrysler retired as president of his company in 1935, though he continued to serve as chairman of the board until his death. His 1937 serialized life story was later compiled into the autobiography Life of an American Workman (1950.)
