John Augustus Shedd (1859–1931) was an American author and instructor. Born in Racine, Wisconsin, he developed the Shedd’s Natural Memory Method, a device for using mnemonics as a memory technique. He published Improvement of the Memory (1889) and A Perfect Memory: How to Attain It (1889.)

Shedd released a collection of adages and aphorisms titled Salt from My Attic (1928.) Shedd’s quotes first became popular when the columnist Ed Howe reprinted them in newspapers such as Richmond Times-Dispatch and The San Bernardino County Sun.
